From The Stoic Fable Book by Phil Van Treuren

stoic fable book for kids 43

Listen to the Narration:

Mouse was feeling restless one day, and went to tell the Old Buck about it.

“Sometimes I get bored with life in this place,” Mouse said. “I’ve heard about some mountains far from here that sound much more beautiful than the forest.”

The Old Buck listened politely to Mouse’s description of the mountains, then shook his antlers.

“It sounds lovely, but why not choose to see the beauty right here?” he said. “Happiness is happiness, regardless of where you decide to feel it. Contentment comes from what’s inside you, not from the stuff that’s around you.”

For Parents: What Stoic Quote Does This Story Illustrate?

“People look for retreats for themselves in the country, by the coast, or in the hills. There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.”

Marcus Aurelius
