From The Stoic Fable Book by Phil Van Treuren

stoic fable for kids 18

Listen to the Narration:

The Old Buck had lived for a long time, and he wasn’t able to move quickly anymore. He spent most of his time lying in a comfortable glade in the forest, and Toad visited him there one afternoon.

“Do you miss running through the forest?” Toad asked the Old Buck after their chat.

The Old Buck thought for a moment. “I do miss it,” he answered. “But I can be just as happy lying here in the glade. It’s nice to think that the forest will keep on being the forest . . . even if I’m not running in it anymore.”

For Parents: What Stoic Quote Does This Story Illustrate?

“I can at once become happy anywhere, for he is happy who has found himself a happy lot. In a word, happiness lies all in the functions of reason, in warrantable desires and virtuous practice.”

Marcus Aurelius
